多年以前，當Ray Drecker（Thomas Jane扮演）讀高中的時候，曾是個前途無限、惹人喜愛的運動健將。如今，他人到中年卻依然一事無成。他在一家學校裏擔任高中教師和籃球教練，報酬微薄，地位低微，還沒有保險。最讓他寒心的是，在一起生活了20年的妻子（Anne Heche扮演）竟然舍他而去，跟她那位有潔癖的皮膚科醫生結婚了。
