這是第二次世界大戰之後，導演黑澤明的第一部電影．以戰時曾經引起軒然大波的京都大學教授龍川事件，鳩山文化部大臣軍閥主義的盛行，而將鼓吹自由主義的京都帝國大學教授龍川開除，當時遭到京都帝國大學上下一致的反對。此外並以卓魯格國際間碟事件做為背景，描寫女主角幸枝於戰爭中所遭遇的種種，進而批判戰爭以及當時盛行的法西斯主義。片中後段描寫決定獨立的幸枝所遭遇的苦難，她跟隨野毛之後，初嚐愛情的幸福滋味，但好景不長，野毛由於暗地從事反戰運動而終生入獄，幸枝也因此每天被特務逼問受盡屈辱。而擔任此案件的檢察官竟是當年的同學係川。幸枝被釋放之後，回到野毛所深愛的故鄉，與野毛的雙親一起渡日。日本在戰敗後，民主主義盛行，八木原教授又回到學校中，幸枝則決定從事農村文化運動。片中的幸枝並非日本過去的傳統女性，而是經過戰爭及戰爭後的混亂期，終於找到自我，忠於自已意誌的新時代女性。
