全職家庭主婦克萊爾（朱麗·鮑溫 Julie Bowen 飾）與做地產經紀的丈夫菲爾（泰·布利爾 Ty Burrell 飾）養育著兩個青春期的女兒和一個十歲大的兒子。克萊爾年過六旬的老父傑（艾德·奧尼爾 Ed O'Neill 飾）新娶了年輕美貌的妻子格勞麗亞（索菲婭·維加拉 Sofía Vergara 飾），加上格勞麗亞和前夫所生的十歲兒子組成了一個新三口之家。克萊爾的弟弟米切爾（傑西·泰勒·弗格森 Jesse Tyler Ferguson 飾）和他的同性愛人卡梅隆（艾瑞克·斯通斯崔特 Eric Stonestreet 飾）則剛從越南領養了一名女嬰，興致勃勃地想要當一對好爸爸。
