在大公司紐斯特德的支持下，生物科學家克裏夫·尼科利（阿德裏安·布洛迪 Adrien Brody 飾）和女友艾爾莎·卡斯特（薩拉·波莉 Sarah Polley 飾）進行基因重組的實驗，並取得初步進展。然而由於資金和公眾輿論等原因，紐斯特德高層決定中斷對他們現有研究的支持。克裏夫和艾爾莎不願半途而廢，於是偷偷展開實驗。他們對基因進行優化重組，並混入了艾爾沙的一部分基因，終於孕育出一個相貌奇特的雌性怪物。
秉著科學家的道德和良知，克裏夫執意要殺死怪物，而艾爾莎則全力保護，視若己出，並將其命名為卓倫。卓倫以飛快的速度成長，最終變成一位擁有獨特美感的女孩（Delphine Chanéac 飾）。在這一過程中，克裏夫和艾爾莎越陷越深……
