故事發生在二戰期間，主人公是法國小鎮Nouvion的咖啡店主René Artois（實際拍攝地點為英國諾福克郡的Lynford Hall）。納粹占領軍搶劫了村子裏所有的有價值的藝術品。
其中包括史上第一個布穀鳥掛鍾，以及一幅號稱是名家Van Clomp所作，價值連城的油畫《墮落的大波麥當娜》。當地德軍指揮官決定把這幅畫歸為己有，強迫Rene把畫藏在他的咖啡館裏。可是，納粹德國領袖希特勒也想得到這幅畫，派了一個蓋世太保軍官前去尋找這幅畫，而這個蓋世太保也想自己貓膩這幅畫。與此同時，出現了若幹這幅油畫的贗品。真品和贗品被弄混了。畫被裝進德國香腸裏，一根放在軍火運輸列車中，在送往希特勒的途中被炸得粉碎，一根被藏起來，還有一根被Flick當成了晚餐。
