24歲的喬納森是紐約曼哈頓的一家建築設計所的設計師，每天過著循規蹈矩的生活，並會對著公寓裏的一台攝影機，記錄下這一天的日程。原來看似古怪的喬納森還有另一重人格——他入睡幾小時後，會變身為約翰繼續生活。約翰同樣也會用錄像來向喬納森講述自己的生活。喬納森無意之中發現約翰有一個交往對象埃琳娜，這有悖於他和約翰之間不可以談戀愛的約定。約翰表示無法接受喬納森苦行僧一樣的生活，一氣之下不再為喬納森拍攝錄像。在幾輪惡作劇之後，喬納森和埃琳娜之間同樣產生了感情。喬納森向醫生娜麗曼陳述了原委，並說出自己的擔憂——他怕約翰將曆史重演，移除掉喬納森這一重人格。約翰趁著自己的活動時間，大鬧喬納森的辦公室。在和約翰的對抗中，喬納森逐漸敗下陣來，他存在的時段越來越少，直到整個“喬納森”都消失殆盡，約翰將帶著對他的懷念繼續人生。
