曆經數年牢獄之災，影子（瑞奇·惠特爾 Ricky Whittle 飾）終於迎來重獲自由的時刻，可是他並不因此而快樂。妻子勞拉（艾米莉·布朗寧 Emily Browning 飾）數日前死於車禍，回家路上又遭遇自稱“星期三”（伊恩·麥柯肖恩 Ian McShane 飾）的男人的不斷糾纏。最終，影子受雇於星期三，成為對方的保鏢。原來星期三的真實身份是北歐之神奧丁，由於現代文明的飛速發展，古老的神祇漸漸被人遺忘，而以手槍、毒品、娛樂為代表的新神迅速崛起。後者無所不用其極想將舊神驅逐，而奧丁作為舊神的代表則四處尋找夥伴，對抗新神的欺淩。繁華時代，神與神的戰爭拉開序幕……
