第一季的故事從1912到1914年第一次世界大戰爆發。Grantham的伯爵的頭銜及產業隻能由男性繼承人同時繼承。現任伯爵Robert通過迎娶了極富有的Cora才讓產業得救，同時她的巨額財產按照契約永久的成為伯爵資產的一部分。沒有子嗣的伯爵隻能讓侄兒Patrick成為法定繼承人（即大女兒Mary的未婚夫）。可Patrick卻在泰坦尼克號事故中喪生，而他們的遠房親戚Matthew將繼承他們的一切，包括伯爵夫人的個人巨額財產。圍繞財產的繼承問題，Mary和Matthew的情感糾葛，Grantham一家和仆人們的關係，會發展會怎樣的故事呢？
