2004年，正值美國總統大選期間，喬治·沃克·布什和約翰·福布斯·克裏的角逐如火如荼。各家新聞媒體爭相報道關於兩位候選人的新聞。哥倫比亞廣播公司《60分鍾》節目的製作人瑪麗·梅普斯也希望可以報道關於大選的相關新聞。她組建了一支精英團隊，其中包括著名主持人丹·拉瑟。他們在追查布什在德克薩斯州空軍國民警衛隊的檔案時發現疑點重重，檔案的部分缺失使他們懷疑布什在服役期間得到優待。為了查明真相，他們試圖聯係當時的軍官，但毫無結果。這時，一位名為比爾的上校自稱擁有布什停止飛行記錄的複印件。瑪麗等人圍繞這份記錄展開詳細調查，並將此新聞公之於眾。但隨後，公示的證據被認為漏洞百出，比爾也反口否定記錄的真實性。一時間，瑪麗·梅普斯聲名狼藉，整個團隊不得不接受審查小組的詢問。最終查明，瑪麗得到的文件在真實性存在嚴重問題，瑪麗·梅普斯被解雇，丹·拉瑟辭職，整個新聞團隊被要求...
